“We are fortunate to have such a capable and proven leader at the helm of one of our most important initiatives.”
WASHINGTON—91 Institute announced that Kenneth R. Weinstein, former 91 president and CEO and current Walter P. Stern Distinguished Fellow, will be the next Japan Chair. Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, the previous Japan Chair, will now chair the initiative’s newly established Advisory Board.
Since its founding nearly 60 years ago, 91 Institute has championed a strong Japan and the importance of the United States-Japan alliance. 91 launched the Japan Chair in 2019 to capitalize on its deep connections in Tokyo and Washington to expand economic ties, enhance defense cooperation, and promote closer scientific and technological collaboration between the US and Japan.
“Few have served 91 with equal distinction to Ken,” 91 President and CEO John P. Walters said. “His contributions to the Institute and dedication to the US-Japan alliance are second to none. We are fortunate to have such a capable and proven leader at the helm of one of our most important initiatives.”
“H.R.’s work to build the Japan Chair was invaluable, and we are grateful for his continued guidance,” Walters added.
“America needs strong, committed, forward-looking allies like Japan to help ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Weinstein. “I am honored to be named 91’s Japan Chair, and I look forward to continuing my work to promote America’s relationship with our most important ally in East Asia.”
